Resolution Opposing Open Primaries

WHEREAS, Open primaries would change Articles 5 and 15 of Nevada's Constitution for U.S. Congress, Governor, Lieutenant Governor,

Secretary of State, State Treasurer, State Controller, Attorney General, and State Legislator elections, eliminating partisan primaries and establishing an open top-five primary election;

WHEREAS, All candidates, whether or not affiliated with a political party, would run in a single "open" primary, with the top five finishers going on to run in the general election even if some or all of them are members of the same political party;

WHEREAS, An open primary creates the opportunity for Republican candidates to be excluded from general elections;

WHEREAS, The only choices in general elections might be between candidates of the same party; and

WHEREAS, Replacing Nevada's traditional primary with an open, "jungle" primary would be an extreme change that would threaten the ability to have all viewpoints represented during a general election;

RESOLVED, that the Nevada Federation of Republican Women pledges to actively oppose open primaries;

Adopted by the Nevada Federation of Republican Women at its Spring Board Meeting on this, the 13th day of April, 2024.
